Open Casting Ages 18+.  
Any young actors wishing to audition must email us to request an audition appointment.  We will only be auditioning a very small amount of actors 8 - 15 for the child/teen roles in this show.    Email resume/headshot to info.obctheater@gmail.com to request an appointment.  Audition appointment is not guaranteed.   

VIDEO SUBMISSIONS:  We WILL NOT be accepting video submissions for ANY ADULT ROLES.  

APPOINTMENTS:  Audition Appointments are available but NOT REQUIRED.   Appointments insure you will be seen at a specific time but ALL walk-ups will be seen.  To Schedule an appointment email info.obctheater@gmail.com.  Please include your preferred time.   

VOCAL AUDITIONS: 
Please prepare 32 bars of a musical theater song in the style of the show.  
An Accompanist will be provided.  
YOU MUST BRING SHEET MUSIC - no recordings or acapella singing allowed.  
We will not have sheet music available for use. Music from the show is encouraged especially if you are auditioning for a specific role.   

DANCE AUDITIONS:  Almost everyone in this show needs to be a strong dancer.   Tap experience is a major plus! 

REHEARSALS: 
Light Rehearsals will begin in June to insure cast is ready for promotional events in July/August.   Regular rehearsals will begin in July.  Rehearsals are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday evenings 6 - 10pm & Saturdays 9am - 12pm. (Actors will be called 2 - 3 times a week)

*There is a stipend for all adult actors.  

PERFORMANCES:
Performances will be September 11th - 20th with 3 possible school day performances on September 11, Sept 17 & 18.  ALL ACTORS MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR ALL performances.   

 

SHREK CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

All ROLES OPEN 
 

SHREK - Our story's title character. A big, green, terrifying ogre who has spent most of his life as an outcast, living in a swamp far from civilization; crass and brutish exterior disguises a soulful, lonely heart. A reluctant hero, Shrek begins as a grumpy hermit, but eventually reveals his layers and becomes the hero. Powerful presence with great wit. A Scottish accent is a must. NOTE - the actor playing this role will be required towear latex make-up appliances.

PRINCESS FIONA - Princess of Far Far Away, daughter of King Harold and Queen Lillian, Fiona has spent most of her life locked in a dragon-guarded castle reading romantic fairy tales and waiting to be saved. Underneath lurks a smart, outspoken girl who can't help burping or launching into hand to hand combat when needed. Fiona transforms into an ogre every night when the sun sets. Quirky, blunt and multitalented, she is not an ordinary princess. Needs to have strong comedic timing & be strong dancer. NOTE - the actor playing this role will be required to wear a latex nose. 
 

DONKEY -  Shrek's self appointed side-kick. A talking donkey who joins Shrek on his epic adventure. Quite the chatterbox, he is not

deterred by Shrek's looks and practically forces himself into his good graces. While easily frightened and pushy, Donkey has optimism and heart, charm and wit. Donkey is a bright-eyed

motormouth whose eagerness and quick wit barely disguise his desperate need for a friend and to be liked. Must have strong comedic timing.  
 

LORD FARQUAAD - 

The comically short, ruthless ruler of Duloc. A pompous, power-hungry little villian with a raging Napoleon complex and intense dislike of all fairytale creatures. Sets out to take a

beautiful princess as his bride in order to claim himself a kingly throne. Self-absorbed, lonely and cruel. NOTE: The actor playing this role will execute all blocking and choreography on

his knees. 
 

DRAGON/MAMA BEAR/MAMA OGRE – 

A dragon that has been charged with guarding Princess Fiona in her isolated castle. She eventually falls in love with Donkey and attempts to keep him forever. Imposing and flirtatious,

but tired of her job as a glorified baby-sitter. MAY Play multiple roles.  NOTE: This actor may control/interact with some puppeteer/moving costume elements.

3 PIGS 

ADULT ENSEMBLE: Seeking a diverse ensemble of all ages to play the Fairy Tale Creatures, people of Duloc, and other various inhabitants of this strange world. Ensemble includes all featured roles such as Pinocchio, Pied Piper, Thelonius, Gingy, etc.   Seeking strong, vivid, dynamic and quirky comic actors adept at comedy and character work, who have wide vocal ranges. Most must be solid dancers (strong jazz and also tap). Puppetry is a plus.  Note: MOST tracks must tap, but not all.

All members of the ensemble play numerous roles in the show, including:

GINGY/SUGAR PLUM FAIRY – A cookie that is tortured by Farquaad’s guards. Strong character actress with an excellent pop sound; must be able to do riffs cleanly and accurately. Comedic role, looking to find someone that can voice him as close to the film as possible, sing with vocal versatility and solid mix, belts to a D.  His wit and resolution help him both avoid trouble and inspire the rest of the fairytale creatures. This character is portrayed with a puppet, which may be voiced and operated by actor appearing as Sugar Plum Fairy. Ideally looking for a dancer or strong mover.

UGLY DUCKLING –  Strong dancer that must tap, excellent performer with a huge heart and able to hold tight harmonies.

3 BLIND MICE  - (will be playing other roles as well). Strong dancers that must tap, excellent performer with a huge heart and able to hold tight harmonies.

WICKED WITCH/QUEEN LILLIAN – (Roles may be cast as same actor or separate)  The Witch may sing the lead in Freak Flag, in which case be able to sell the 11 o’clock number and have a killer voice.   A DIVA, strong personality, prefer a dancer that can tap or someone that knows how to hold themselves as such and knows how to work a cape/dress; must move extremely well regardless if this role is cast as a tapper or not.  Queen Lillian is Fiona’s mother and Queen of Far-Far-Away. Sings a beautiful duet with King Harold to young Fiona in the opening number “Big, Bright, Beautiful World.” She is elegant and strong.

FAIRY GODMOTHER – Female, 20-40 years old. A bubbly and funny woman.  Sees the bright side at all times.  She also may sing the lead in Freak Flag, in which case be able to sell the 11 o’clock number and have a killer voice. Ideally looking for a dancer or strong mover that must tap.

BLUEBIRD – Female voice with a VERY high upper register (up to a high E) to chirp/sing in “Morning Person”.  This is an off stage voice and will be cast from one of the roles above.

PINOCCHIO –  Must have killer falsetto/mix.  The leader of the fairytale creatures.  Pinocchio is a puppet whose nose grows every time he lies. Plenty of sass with a penchant for lying, he leads the troupe of Fairytale Creatures in the musical numbers “Story of My Life” and “Freak Flag.”  All they have ever wanted was to be a real boy.  We are seeking a strong comedic actor that can really deliver a beautiful and honest moment right before Freak Flag.  This actor must either be a dancer or move extremely well.

PAPA OGRE –  Tall. Deep, brooding voice.  Sings a beautiful duet with Mama Ogre to young Shrek in the opening number “Big, Bright, Beautiful World.”
 

THELONIOUS/PAPA BEAR (may also be played but he same actor as Papa Ogre) –  Tall. Deep, brooding voice.   Also plays PAPA BEAR and THELONIOUS, Farquaad’s henchman.  Must have an excellent sense of comedic timing and be a versatile actor.  Should move well, tap is a plus, but not required for this role.

BIG BAD WOLF – Tough guy with a secret he’s just waiting to set free.  Comedic role, bass-baritone to high G.  Prefer a dancer, but must move extremely well and tap is a plus

PETER PAN – Comedic role.  Excellent dancer.  Ability to do tricks/acro/jumps/Russians etc. a huge plus.

3 PIGS  –  Must be able to hold tight harmonies, be excellent movers or strong dancers.
